NATIONAL GUARD SEND OFF - This coming Saturday morning, March 16 at 9:00 a.m. our local National Guard unit ( B Co 2/121 IN ) will be leaving the area for deployment. Their buses with the soldiers aboard will be leaving the Armory and coming through downtown Newnan at 9 a.m. Please consider lining the street between there and the court square waving a flag and let them know we appreciate them and wish them a safe journey. The National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report has highlighted this crisis, revealing that veteran suicide has become the No. 1 issue facing this community. With statistics indicating that between 17 and 22 veterans or service members take their own lives each day, equating to over 6,000 lives lost annually, it's evident that urgent action is required. This issue demands immediate attention, particularly as the rate of suicide among veterans is more than 50% higher than that of their non-veteran counterparts. 2023 MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ACTIVITIES Memorial Day is a day to honor our U.S. Military Personnel who have died while serving in the US Armed Forces while defending our country. POPPY DRIVE VFW Members will be out at Walmart, Kroger at Thomas Crossroads, & Kroger at Lower Fayetteville on Friday-Monday, May 26-29 giving out Buddy Poppies. Please wear these poppies proudly to remember the sacrifice our Fallen Soldiers made for our country. Donations always welcome. FLAGS ON GRAVES Everyone is welcome to come out and help put flags on Veteran’s graves on Saturday, May 27 at 9:00 a.m. Everyone is asked to meet at the Coweta Veterans Club at 9:00 a.m. to receive maps of the Veteran graves, coffee, donuts & a group photo. FOUR CHAPLAINS DAY On February 3rd each year, Four Chaplains Day honors four military chaplains from World War II who sacrificed their lives for fellow service members. #FourChaplainsDay Chaplains in the military are an integral part of the service environment. They provide counseling, spiritual guidance, conduct services, and religious rites, among other responsibilities, and serve all over the globe. If there are military personnel stationed there, chaplains are too. During World War II, four chaplains who had attended Chaplain School together at Harvard boarded the Dorchester en route to the Army Command Base in southern Greenland. Aboard the ship were 904 service members. The four chaplains were Reverend George L. Fox, a Methodist minister, Reverend Clark V. Poling of the Reformed Church of America, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, and Father John P. Washington of the Roman Catholic Church. Their voyage began on January 23, 1943. At the time, German U-Boats were patrolling the area, ...
